WATER RESOURCES RESEARCH INSTITUTE
NARC, Islamabad
INTRODUCTION
The Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) was established during 1991-92 as
a result of re-organization of the water related research programmes being
executed at the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC), Islamabad.
Presently, the Institute is involved in problem-oriented, strategic, operational
and inter-disciplinary research in areas of national importance.
The Institute has fully trained multi-disciplinary team of about 24 qualified
scientists / engineers supported by skilled staff of over 40 persons with
well-equipped laboratories and weather stations. The scientists and engineers
are engaged in research activities aimed at devising solutions and management
strategies for water resources which are economically viable, technically
feasible and socially acceptable.
GOAL
The goal of the Institute is to develop technologies, new knowledge and
management strategies related to water resources of the rainfed and irrigated
farming system to enhance the productivity per unit of water.
OBJECTIVES
To optimize the productivity of water use under rainfed and irrigated environment.
To develop sustainable balance between resource utilization and its replenishment.
ISSUES/ PROBLEMS
Aridity causing shortage of water
Erratic rainfall causing significant variability in river flows
Excessive mining of groundwater in fragile environments like Balochistan
Water erosion causing degradation of watersheds and range lands upstream and sedimentation of water reservoirs.
Significant losses in water conveyance and application causing water logging and salinity
Loss of rain water as surface run-off causing floods
RESEARCH PROGRAM
Collaboration with other Organizations
The WRRI-NARC has been engaged in operational research with national and international organization which include:

Planning and Development Division, Government of Pakistan.
International Centre for Bio-Saline Agriculture (ICBA), Dubai.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan.
Ministry of Environment, Government of Pakistan.
International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Nepal.
