National Reference Laboratory for Poultry Diseases

The National Reference Laboratory for Poultry Diseases (NRLPD) is an entity within the Animal Sciences Institute at the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) Islamabad, Pakistan established on 1st July 2004 undera development project of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL) and Dr. Khalid Naeem, Chief Scientific Officer was appointed its Director. The program was set up with a mandate to coordinate and undertakesurveillance, diagnostics and research activities in the field of avian health in this country, with the collaboration of relevant provincial, regional and international institutions.

During the onslaught of Avian Influenza H7N3 in 2004-5, first National Contingency Plan for HPAI Control was developed under which this lab was awarded the status of Federal Coordinating Unit for initiating the National Program forControl and Prevention of Avian Influenza (NPCPAI) in this country. Since then NRLPD has been coordinating with eight Provincial Avian diagnostics labs along with 24 Regional Avian Diseases Surveillance Units, set up under NPCPAI. In 2008 the NRLPD was approved as a permanent department at NARC and further recognized to serve as a Regional Leading Diagnostic Lab (RLDL) for SAARC countries in the area of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza through financial and technical support of FAO and USAID.This AI Surveillance and Diagnostic network effectively contributed first in the control of AIV H7N3during 2005 and subsequently during the outbreaks of AIV H5N1 during 2006-8.

Since then NRLPD has been coordinating in the area of disease surveillance, diagnosis and research-work focusing major emerging and re-emerging poultry diseases with the cooperation of public and private sector stake-holders in this countries and with other regional and internationalinstitutions engaged with avian health diagnostics and research.

The NRLPD has recently acquired international accreditation status of ISO/IEC-17025:2005 for running conventional and selected molecular diagnostic arrays. NRLPD scientist are also actively engaged conducting applied research on selected avian health issues, supervising graduate students in their thesis research, assisting  the provincial public and private sector institutions towards their capacity building in terms of  extending expertise and technical know-how through conducting trainings and dissemination of research findings.

The major areas of research addressed at the NRLPD include biological and molecular characterization of emerging and prevailing strains of various avian pathogens for better understanding of their pathogenesis, diagnosis and control.
