Crop Sciences Institute was established in 1990 with the objectives to exploit the potential of the various crop commodities to ensure the food security in the country. The major task of the institute is research and development related to broader areas of crop improvement and production in the major crop commodities including Wheat-Barley, Maize, Sorghum, Millet, and Fodders, Oilseed Crops (Sunflower, Brassica, Groundnut, Sesame, soybean and Linseed), Pulses (Chickpea, Lentil, Mung bean and Mash). Initially all the commodity programswere placed at NARC and headed by Coordinators, however, the institute underwent in reorganizationin 2013 and two programs, Rice and Sugar crops were shifted to Kala Shah Kaku and Thatha, respectively. Moreover,National Coordinators were moved to PARC head quarter and the Programs were led by Program Leaders.

Focus of the institute is development of high yielding crop varieties and improved production technologies to integrate research findings in agriculturefor achieving, sustaining food security and improving livelihood.Institute also provides services to provincial research and educational institutions, universities and private sector in crop germplasm evaluation, supply and testing field performance of their candidate lines in different ecologies of the country through multi-location testing system of National Uniform Yield Trials (NUYT).
