Crop Sciences Institute

Crop Sciences Institute (CSI) was established in 1990 at NARC Islamabad to improve crop productivity and ensure food security in the county. During 1991 to 2013,all national coordinated research programs on wheat, rice, fodder, Maize sorghum & millet, oilseeds, pulses and sugarcane were part of CSI with major focus on coordination and crop research. In 2013, coordination of all commodity program has been shifted to PARC headquarter.

The major focus of the CSI is productivity improvement through crop improvement, crop management inWheat, Maize, Sorghum, Rice, Millet, Fodders (Oats, Sorghum Sudan and Matt grass), Oilseed Crops (Groundnut, Rape seed / Mustard, Sunflower, Sesame, soybean and Linseed) and Pulses (Chickpea, Lentil, Mung bean and Mash). Since 1991, CSI has developed more than 50 varieties / hybrids of wheat, rice, maize, fodder, oilseed and pulses crops. The institute is producing seed of high yielding and disease resistant NARC released varieties and providing to farmers and seed companies for cultivation and further multiplication.

  2. Collaborate and maintain linkages with international, national and provincial research organizations

  3. Impart professional training to scientists, students and farmers

Objectives

  • Development of disease resistant, high yielding & good quality crop varieties/hybrids for various ecologies and cropping systems

  • Development of improved production techniques for various ecologies and cropping systems

  • Knowledge dissemination to stakeholders (scientists, farmers, students) through trainings & field days

  • Facilitate seed production for diffusion of new varieties / hybrids among farming community

  • Introduction of new crops for promotion of crop diversification

  • Collaboration with national, international partners for knowledge and material sharing
