It is very necessary to adopt latest potato seed production technology in Pakistan through tissue culture and aeroponic techniques: Chairman PARC

Islamabad: Potato is an important cash crop of the world and is also widely cultivated throughout the Pakistan on an area of 194 thousand hectares with an annual production of 04.59 million tones with an average yield of 23.6 tons per hectare. Potato per hectare yield is comparatively low as compared to other countries because of several reasons. Availability of healthy seed has been recognized as a single major constraint which is limiting its production in Pakistan. Pakistan has the capacity to meet good quality seed requirement only 01% against the total requirement of 415000 million tons. Due to global importance of tissue culture industry and its achievements in production and management strategies around the world, it has become the extreme necessity to establish and disseminate this modern technology to Potato grower of Pakistan.

To cope with the problem of shortage for good quality Potato seed, national Institute for Genomics and Advance Biotechnology (NIGAB), NARC is organizing a Three Days Training on Aeroponic Potato Seed Production Technology from 07-19 December, 2021. The chief guest Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali, Chairman PARC inaugurated the training program and addressed to the participants of the training. In his key note address to the training participants he told about the Prime Minister Agriculture Emergency Program and emphasized on adoption of latest potato seed production technology in Pakistan through tissue culture and aeroponic techniques. He also highly acknowledged the cooperation of Korean Government for the Agricultural development in Pakistan under Korean program for international agriculture (KOPIA). The purpose of this Three Days Training is to introduce and to revolutionize the Potato production system by adopting and using tissue culture and Aeroponic techniques with the help of Korean Program for International Agriculture (KOPIA) to attain Potato seed self-sufficiency in Pakistan.
