The delegation comprised on European Union Ambassador Pakistan Mrs. Androulla Kaminara, Mr. Filpo Technical Specialists EU, Mr. Roberto Advisor EU, Mr. Petar Agnew Emergency & Resilience Program Specialists FAO& Mr. Qazi Ashraf Head Sindh Zone, visited PARC-AZRI Umerkot on Tuesday 16 November, 2021. The agenda of the visit was to witness the R&D for Thar Desert by PARC-AZRI Umerkot. & future cooperation/coordination. The European Union is already supported to FAO for early warning of disaster to desert area of Sindh.
The Ambassador visited the institute thoroughly and appreciated all the research activities specially introducing of new plant species and developed different models. She shown keen interest for coordination in future with PARC-AZRI Umerkot.
The undersigned discussed in detail the future plan of the institute and current activities going on at institute. She offered support from EU to the institute for further work kin desert area of Thar. I explain in detail the new PSDP-Project submitted with title THAR CAMELL for funding 2022-23. She noted down the proposed work and larger scope to turn the waste land of Thar Desert in to productive land and breed improvement of livestock, development of byproducts and revival of cottage industry. According to my research and findings 30% of the underground water of Tharparkar can be used for agriculture and Livestock and same was endorsed by the FAO representative Qazi Ashraf as 35%.
The desert land 1.4 m hectare can be cultivated by using available 30-35% underground water for arid horticulture, forage block, forestation and livestock.
The same discussion was held at Deputy Commissioner office Umerkot and being supported by the DC Umerkot. The EU Ambassador inquire how to start this development and who will take the lead. The undersigned suggested that the integration is needed between MNFS&R, Agriculture Ministry Sindh, Local Government, Donor and implementing partner. All these players sit together and develop joint plan of action to make a game changer plan for Desert area of Tharparkar. This desert is the only cultivable desert in the world.
The EU Ambassador agreed to discuss the issue with all stake holders and coordinate as partner with mutual understanding.
