Visit of Federal Secretary M/o NSF&R and Chairman PARC, at AZRI (PARC), Umerkot

AZRI, Umerkot (21st November 2017)..... The honorable Federal Secretary Mr. Fazal Abbas Maken along with Dr. Yusuf Zafar T.I., Chairman PARC and Dr. Asim Rehan Kazmi, DG SARC thoroughly visited Arid Zone Research Institute (PARC) Umerkot on 21-11-2017. The Director AZRI, Dr. Attaullah Khan briefed about the current activities of the institute i.e. Seed bank, Kitchen gardening, solar desalination unit, drip irrigation systems, herbarium block, hydro phonic cultivation of Maize, Wheat and Barley, Umer & Marvi nurseries, bio- fertilizer plant, different grasses, agro forestry block, trails of rabi crop and orchards (i.e. Date Palm, Grafted Ber, Falsa, Olive, Chiku, Lemon), fish pond, biogas plant, development projects and Thar Desert.


During the visit Federal Secretary, appreciated the efforts made by the scientists and staff under the leadership of Director AZRI Umerkot within limited available resources. During the visit the dignitaries met with the local farmers Dr. Syed Noor Ali Shah Chairman District Council, Umerkot, Mr. Ghulam Sarwar Dars progressive livestock farmer, CEO of NGO, AWARE® Agriculture officers from extension department and other farmers. Mr. Ghulam Akbar Dars requested to the Secretary MNFS&R and Chairman PARC for the import of the certified semen of cows (Gir, Nelor and Red Sindhi) from Brazil for artificial inseminate in local Thari indigenous cattle breed for improvement of milk and meat production. The secretary urged to design project proposal on silage/bale packing machines for this area to reduce the food scarcity issue in the Desert area and also he advised that arrange farmers visit on Ispaghol thresher at NARC, the Federal Secretary further directed that the Aerva tomentosa (Booh) must be analyzed for their nutrition value as it can be used in livestock food to increase its economic value. He further urged that Calligonum polygonoides (Phog) must be tested of its oil content and analyzed to identify the presence of oil and its further uses. The Secretary said that variety of Chili crop should be developed and the rate of seed of chili (Dandi cut) must be increased from Rs.500/ acre to Rs.1000/acre. The Secretary advised to research on the date palm dwarf varieties and these varieties must be tested in Desert Area of Thar.

He further added valuable comments that “It is refreshing to see the progress that AZRI has made in the last three to four years. The institute is already reaching out to the farming community but these needs to be enhanced and support by NGO’s should be garnered in this regard. Overall the commitment and zeal that has been demonstrated by Director AZRI and his team is really commendable”

In the end, Director, AZRI Umerkot offered vote of thanks to Federal Secretary, Chairman PARC & DG SARC, NGO representatives, Agri. Extension officers and farmers.
