JICA will also help for training to small farmers of Balochistan Province.
Islamabad (April 28, 2017) ……Agriculture is the key source of livelihood to the 83% people of rural areas and this sector contributing 21% to provincial GDP and engaged more than 36% of the labor force of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). Dr. Yusuf Zafar (TI), Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) while addressing to “PARC-JICA Joint Coordinating Committee meeting at National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) said that agriculture among economic sectors plays key role in developing Pakistan’s economy. KPK province is highly dependent on irrigation for agriculture.He further stated that JICA is playing very important role for improvement of agriculture in KPK as well as for Pakistan. We are grateful to JICA team as they develop a big change in Pakistan through their project. He appreciated the concept of the project which will strengthen the weak link. He said that with the collaboration of JICA we also want to provide training to the farmers of Balochistan province. But there is a challenge for us that Balochistan people are less educated and also there are so many other issues that we facing like electricity, water supply, etc. He acknowledged the support of Government of Japan for improvement of agriculture sector of Pakistan.
Yoshihisa Onoe, Senior Representative of JICA while addressing, said that the training session was very successful as agriculture is playing a great role in the economics of both countries. He said that for better understanding of farmers, we divided the training session into two parts. In first session, we taught them the basic knowledge and methods of understanding farmer’s practices and in the second session we take them to field for focused knowledge and extension activities. In the complete training there were total 761 activities. the number of farmers were 5,822 who adopted 40% of disseminated technology and 100% farmers got good results. After this training we will provide agriculture related books for the betterment of this sector in KPK. This will improve the economic growth and reduce poverty, he added.
Dr. Muhammad Azeem Khan, Director General NARC said that “we are looking for the further opportunities to work with JICA, as it has strengthened the agriculture department of KPK. In future we are expecting a better change for the welfare of KPK people.”
Director Agriculture Polytech Institute (API) while speaking on the occasion explained that its a unique training held at NARC for KPK agri. extension services staff. JICA team is very cooperative. They trained more than 2,000 workers and interacted with more than 20000 farmers in KPK through this training.” He said that extension of this project is as necessary as it consists on lectures, practical demonstrations as well as field implementation. NARC scientists are really knowledgeable and teaching all the trainers, the team did hard work for this activity.
The event was attended by Chief Representative JICA Pakistan Office; Mr. Ken Okumura, Representative, Mr. Akira Kato, Mr. Hiroyasu Onuma, Ms Itagaki, Ms. Hiromi Takenaka and number of PARC scientists.
