Islamabad (January 11, 2017)……….. Six new maize and three millet hybrids have been recommended for commercial cultivation in Pakistan by the Variety Evaluation Committee (VEC) on maize, sorghum, millet and fodder crops in its meeting held here at Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) Headquarters in Islamabad.
The National Coordinator (Cereal System) PARC said that a total of 13 proposals including seven on maize, four pearl millet and two fodder SS hybrids were presented by the private seed companies and public research institutions for discussion. The VEC recommended only six maize and three millet hybrids for commercial cultivation in the country.
The meeting was presided over by Member Plant Sciences Division of PARC and Chairman VEC Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali. The meeting was attended by technical members from NARS system and private seed companies. While presiding over the meeting Member (PSD) & Chairman VEC appreciated the role of private seed companies for taking interest in research and development of maize, sorghum, millet and fodder crops and working in close collaboration with public sector. General issues related to adaptability / national uniform yield trials were also discussed in detail in the meeting.
