IFPRI-PSSP, USAID and PARC Launch a New Book on “Agriculture and the Rural Economy in Pakistan: Issues, Outlooks, and Policy Priorities”

Islamabad (December 19)……….. International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Pakistan Strategy Support Program (PSSP) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with the collaboration of Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) has launched a new Book on “Agriculture and the Rural Economy in Pakistan; Issues, Outlooks and Policy Priorities” in a ceremony held at National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) Islamabad.

National and international agri. experts, scientists, academia, researchers and representatives of international development agencies such as USAID, IFPRI, FAO-Pakistan, CIMMYT, ICARDA and others attended the ceremony.

Addressing on the occasion, Mr. Neil Buhne, UN Resident Coordinator for Pakistan, Ms. Julie Chen, Deputy Mission Director USAID-Pakistan, Dr. Nadeem Amjad, Acting Chairman PARC, Dr. Stephen Davies, SRF and Program Leader IFPRI-Pakistan, Dr. Umar Farooq, Member (Social Sciences) PARC, Dr. Muhammad Azeem Khan, DG NARC and other speakers expressed their views and comments about the book. They acknowledged it very useful for colleagues in Govt and policy makers, planner, academia, researchers, students development practitioners and rural communities whose work is essential to accelerate growth, development and poverty reduction in Pakistan.

On this occasion some eminent international experts have given detailed presentations on important chapters mentioned in the book which include Dr. David Spielman, SRF IFPRI-Washington  on “Food Agriculture, and Rural Development in Pakistan”; Dr. Mubarik Ali, Member (Food Security and Climate Change) Planning Commission of Pakistan on “Pakistan Fertilizer Sector: Structure, Policies, Performance and Impacts”; Dr. Stephen Davies on “Irrigation and Water Management in the Indus Basin”; and Dr. Ahsan Rana, Associate Professor of LUMS on the “Architecture of Pakistani Seed System”.

The speakers also acknowledged the contributions of authors and editors to prepare very compressive and useful book. While addressing on the occasion Dr. Nadeem Amjad, Acting Chairman PARC congratulated IFPRI, USAID team and other members to produce a such nice and useful book. He said that there are good suggestions in the book for policy makers, researchers and planners to prepare development projects for agriculture and rural development.

Dr. Muhammad Azeem Khan, DG NARC in his vote of thank said that such kind of exclusive book on agriculture issues was long awaited. He congratulated David Spielman, Sohail J Malik, Paul Dorosh, Nuzhat Ahmad and others for their hard work as authors as well as editors of the book. He said that a large number of authors have written almost thirteen chapters they really deserve special appreciation and acknowledgement.

He said that all important topics like food and agriculture, nutrition and poverty, rural development, land tenure, irrigation and water management, seed systems, fertilizer policies, agri. prices and trade, devolution, women empowerment, aspiration of the rural poor, public services, rural non-farm economy, etc. are covered in this book.

He further said that PARC / NARC is part of IFPRI’s book launching ceremony and hope that we can continue working together in identifying and resolving some of the major agricultural research gaps in Pakistan. He said this book will be very helpful to provide fresh insights into how economic growth, poverty reduction, and welfare improvements can be achieved in Pakistan through evidence-based policies and investments in food security.
