Bahawalpur(February 09)………… A one day training program on the “Profitable Cultivation of Protected Vegetables through Integrated Insect Pest Management” was organized by Arid Zone Research Institute, PARC, Bahawalpur under AVRDC-AIP (AZRI, Bahawalpur Component) on Tuesday 09-02-2016 at the conference hall of AZRI Bahawalpur for the beneficiaries of cluster No. 22 and progressive growers of vegetables under protected cultivation. A group of 25 progressive farmers participated in two important sessions of the training course. At the occasion, different eminent tunnel farming scientists shared their experiences with practical demonstration for capacity building of the protected vegetable growers of this cluster. Group discussion proved a vibrant mechanism to exchange the knowledge within the participants for further betterment and improvement on production of protected vegetables.

Sr. Director AZRI, Bahawalpur and the Focal Person AVRDC also highlighted different research activities and various ongoing projects being carried out at AZRI, Bahawalpur. He focused on the regular field advisory services, field observational visits for the farmers, identification of suitable hybrids and extension of IPM on regular basis for the capacity building of the farmers.
Team Leader AVRDC-Pakistan shared in detail about the production technology, insect pest management improvement in tunnel structure and production of summer vegetable under green net. AZRI scientists shared the protocols of ‘improved production technology of protected vegetable cultivation’, ‘disease management’, and ‘insects pests of PCV and their IPM’. The progressive farmers were given the practical session on the farm of a progressive protected vegetable farmer at Dera Izzat, Bahawalpur; in addition to demonstration on ‘installation of fruit-fly trap in the field’.

The farmers admired the efforts of AZRI and AVRDC and expressed keen interest during the demonstration assembly. The certificates were distributed to the participants of training at the end of program.
