A training workshop on “Tissue-Culture and Micro Irrigation Systems for Tunnel Farming held NSTHRI, Thatta-PARC, Sindh. It was joint activity of Climate Change, Alternate Energy and Water Resources Institute (CAEWRI) and National Sugar, Tropical Horticulture Research Institute (NTHRI), Thatta, Sindh (NTHRI) and Tissue Culture Program, NARC with the collaboration of Pak-China, coordination unit of Water Component Project, NARC, Islamabad
The Training workshop was divided in two sections i.e., Tissue Culture and Micro Irrigation System Management. Dr. Amjad Parveez, Director General, SARC welcomed the participants and briefed about training workshop.
Dr. Ghani Akbar, Program Leader, IWM, CAEWRI, National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), Islamabad delivered key note address and highlighted the importance of water Resources and Irrigation Management of the country. Dr. Aish Muhammd, Program Leader tissue culture, NARC presented the problems of banana tissue culture and management.Engr. Abdul Ghafoor Mangrio, program leader, agricultural water management program explained the positive points of the system and explained the components and layout of irrigation system along with its functions. He also told that water is playing vital role in agriculture, especially in vegetable and fruit through drip irrigation systems under tunnel farming system in the country and farmer can easily save the water through applying of micro irrigation system. It can be easily installed and handled the issues of drip irrigation systems especially in tunnel farming at farm level. The participants acknowledged PARC/NARC role in developing agriculture sector in the country and emphasized for greater linkages with provincial Government, Sindh.
Forty professionels i.e., Agricultural Research Officers Sindh Govt, Senior faculty members of Sind Agricultural University Tandojam, Scientists of AZRI Umerkot, SSRI Tandojam and SARC Karachi were participated in the training workshop.
Dr. Amjad Parveez, Director General, SARC is emphasised that for adaptation of Micro Irrigation System because of its potential in vegetables and fruit production, especially in lower sindh (Karachi and Thatta districts). He thanked the participants for taking keen interest in training. Dr. Amjad Parveez, Director General, SARC and CAEWRI scientists assured the participants to extend full cooperation for such type of other trainings and demonstrations in future at other location of Sindh, because extension of new technologies to the farmers is major promise of PARC / NARC. After the completion of program the Director General, SARC distributed the certificates to all trainee participants.
