Plant Biotechnology Program
Developing high frequency regeneration system and transformation in rice and wheat.
Genetic improvement of wheat and rice for drought and salt tolerance through marker-assisted selection and genetic transformation.
DNA finger printing of traditional and improved cultivars of wheat and rice.
Genetic transformation of potato for induction of disease resistance against fungal pathogens and production of disease free potato seed through tissue culture.
Transgenic tomato with resistance to bacterial wilt.
Production of virus-free banana plants through tissue culture. Status of cotton harboring Bt gene in Pakistan.
Production of inter-specific crosses in rice through embryo rescue.
Marker-aided selection of rice genotypes for resistance to bacterial blight in rice.
Transgenic plant production of rice for bacterial blight resistance gene.
Identification and molecular characterization of important microbes.
Plant Genetic Resources Program
Acquisition, collection, conservation and distribution of crop genetic resources.
Preliminary and detailed evaluation of collected Germplasm.
Micro-propagation of rare crops through tissue culture.
Screening and identification of resistance sources to biotic and abiotic stresses.
Documentation and dissemination of PGR information.
National Herbarium Porgram
The primary objective of Herbarium is maintenance of dried plant specimens as reference collection for research scientist working with wild plants. New collections from unexplored areas and species not represented in the herbarium are regularly added to the herbarium. Basic data related to ecology, distribution and uses of plants is stored along with the specimens and this knowledge is transferred in the form of books, research papers etc.
Assessment of the conservation status of species and the habitats at local, regional and global level. Identification of threats responsible for the decline or degradation and conservation measures needed for the protection of wild plant resources.
Provide information related to plants to government ministries and non-government institutions for policy decisions and planning documents at national level, international conventions or regional cooperation programmes.
