Over the years, potato has become an important crop for both farmers and consumers in Pakistan. Potato is the fourth most important crop by volume of production when compared with the other staple food crops, having a high nutritive value and gives higher returns to the farmers. Pakistan is self-sufficient in potatoes for household consumption; the surplus produce is being exported to different countries. The farmers rely for more than 99% on locally produced potato seed. At the time of independence the area under potato crop was only 3000 hectare producing 15000 tonnes which increased to 13, 85,538 hectare during 2009-2010 with total production 31,41,439 tonnes.
