How many
varieties have been developed by PARC and which are the varieties recommended
for general cultivation?
Ans. Through germplasm evaluation (Fruit crops) different
varieties under different fruit crops have been evaluated which are as under:

What type of land is suitable for fruit cultivation?
Ans. Generally well drained, deep loam soils are recommended for growing fruit
tree crops. Shallow and very heavy soils are discouraged.
What are the cultivation techniques and sources of seed availability?
Ans. There are different planting systems/methods however, square system is very
common. Conventionally two seasons are most suitable i.e. spring (Feb. - March)
and summer (mid July to August). Plants are generally available in public sector
agricultural Institutions at provincial as well as federal level and in private
nurseries.
Which are the major insect pests/diseases and how these can be controlled?
Ans. Different fruit plants have different disease problems (some are soil borne
others affect canopy). Fungicides are available in the market to control the
diseases.
What are the major recommendations for farmers to improve fruit production/
productivity?
Ans. Orchard management includes timely application of nutrients (fertilizer
both organic and inorganic) according to plant age and vigour. Water requirement
according to soil and climate, prunning, disease and insect control when
applicable and weeds control during summer and winter seasons.
