What type of services are being provided by PARC in the area of Scientific Information and Knowledge Management?
Ans. These services include:
Library
services like fresh arrivals of books and journals, contents of current
journals, hard/soft copies of research journals/articles,
scanning of documents and photocopies of scientific material.
On-line
searching of international research journals.
Internet,
e-mail and other online facilities.
Bibliographic
services from national and international databases (online/offline on
CDs/diskettes).
Dissemination
of research results through national print media as public information.
Scientific
and functional photography.
Consultancy and advisory on information and communication technologies (ICTs) and news media.
What
is the status of NARC Library?
Ans. NARC Library has been upgraded as National Library of Agricultural Sciences during 2003-06. It is fully computerized with a holding of 30,000(+) books, journals and documents. Its catalog is available on internet. It is equipped with latest technologies like multi-media/ audio-visual etc.
What is the international ranking of PARC website and its status of updation?
Ans. PARC Website www.parc.gov.pk is the largest on agricultural research in Pakistan. It stands first in google search on agriculture research. It was initiated in Aug. 2000 with 200 pages and has expanded to 500(+) pages. It has 09 databases available online. It is being regularly updated. It is the multi-lingual website having a strong portion of Urdu pages. It is accessed by 50-60 visitors daily from all over the world. It has an “agro-forum” having 350(+) members regularly taking part in discussion on hot issues relating to agriculture.
Has PARC developed any databases indigenously?
Ans. Yes. Five databases on agricultural research have been developed indigenously by the Directorate of Scientific Information of PARC/NARC, viz. i) “Pakistan Agriculture, ii) NARC Library Catalog, iii) Union Database of Journals, iv) National Agricultural Research Information System (NARIS) and v) Database of Pakistani Periodicals on Agriculture and Allied Subjects.
What are the clientele groups of PARC’s Scientific Information facilities and how these can be accessed?
Ans.
The clientele group of PARC’s Scientific Information and Knowledge Management
services comprise agricultural scientists, researchers, planners, research
managers, administrators, policy makers, university students and progressive
farmers. They have the access to the scientific information facilities through
personal visits, postal services, telephone, e-mail and above all online access
through internet and visits to PARC website.
