SOCIAL SCIENCES DIVISION
Social Sciences Division (SSD) of Pakistan
Agricultural Research Council (PARC) operates through a network of five social
sciences research establishments including Social Sciences Institute (SSI) at
NARC Islamabad and four Institutes housed at the provincial agricultural
research systems, and one at AJK. Mandate of these institutes is to participate
in multidisciplinary research with the provincial and federal research system.
SSD role is also to analyze how well new innovations meet farmers needs; and
identifying and helping to resolve constraints to technology adoption. It also
bridges the gap between policy makers and growers by making them aware of the
problems confronted by the growers on the basis of the empirical research
findings.
Socio-Economic Research
Achievements
Social scientists of PARC were initially involved in conducting agriculture
systems based diagnostic surveys for setting research priorities in all
agro-ecological zones of Pakistan. Issues like timeliness of wheat sowing across
different cropping systems were identified and further assessment continued at
different stages of technology design, validation and scaling up. Resource
conservation technologies assessments, varietal diffusion surveys, yield gap
analyses, returns to investment in agricultural research were other important
areas achieved through collaborative/multi-disciplinary research approaches. A
pioneer work was spearheaded on pesticide policy analysis to share scientific
information regarding pesticide use externalities at highest policy making
levels. Socio-economists have been able to evolve technology evaluation
processes while working in national, international and regional projects. These
analyses contributed in developing strategies for enhancing the promotion of
viable technologies through involving extension and development partners.
Detailed studies on marketing structure, conduct and transaction costs were
attempted for all important fruits, vegetables and cut-flowers. Niche marketing
and value chain analyses are the current research endeavors being undertaken to
estimate the economics of alternative enterprises.
Technology Transfer
Activities
The SSD has been undertaking technology transfer activities on a small scale
through its research institutes, the Technology Transfer Institutes (TTIs).A
number of field days were organized by these institutes during the last three
years in which expert scientists were invited to instruct and interact with the
farmers in various cropping zones of the country.
